i had my chance to hang out with some "ol' folx" this weekend...LOL...they're not really old, but why not use this time to point out their "senior"ity?! I had a nice time and I got a wonderful dosage of culture*. it was miami carnival weekend too, so there were much festivities to choose from. my father and his friends basically rolled like how my peers hang out and party sometimes....night after night...Friday night, out til 3AM...Saturday night, out til after 12AM...and yet another event on Sunday.
in addition to the fact that my family (and friends) do not look our ages, i think it is wonderful that society doesn't govern how we should "be" just b/c we (they, really) are 50+. being the only younger person in a group of older people had it's rewards. words of wisdom (
don't marry a west indian man ) and insight (
the women act like they just discovered they had breasts ) flowed in and out of the conversation all weekend long.
by the end of the weekend, my flagged had been waved...i followed the iron...jump upped...and all the other things required when going from fete to fete. all-in-all, a great weekend!
*for some reason, (i believe) my father thinks that i live in a bubble devoid of west indian culture. i don't even know how much he really believes it, but I am the "international traveler" of the family and make attempts to stay connected to my ancestry.
